Depression and Drug Abuse

depression and drug abuse

We all have bad days. We struggle with the daily stresses of work, relationship and financial problems. For most, there will be down periods and these will pass. But for those who suffer from depression, this emotional stress does not pass as easy. This is when depression and drug abuse become apparent.

Depression is a serious mental condition and has many severely negative consequences, such as:

  • Addiction – if depression is left untreated, the individual will self medicate with drugs and alcohol. The sad truth is that substance abuse will only worsen the symptoms.
  • Self-injury – individuals who suffer with depression will inflict pain upon themselves by cutting or burning themselves. Death can result from self harming.
  • Reckless behavior – when we feel hopeless, angry or bad about ourselves, we will likely less likely take care of ourselves or consider the consequences of our risky behaviors.
  • Relationship problems – relationships suffer when we are stressed out. Individuals will lash out, stop going to social events and isolate.
  • Health issues – insomnia and unhealthy eating brings on a myriad of health issues, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Substance abuse and Depression

It is common for individuals who abuse drugs and alcohol to struggle with depression. Many will abuse alcohol as it is a suppressant and central nervous system depressant. It is common for individuals who suffer from depression to become addicted to alcohol. This is what is known as a dual diagnosis and both the depressions and drug abuse will need to be treated.
